Bahamas Academy Welcomes Its New Principal

T. Milton Lewis
T. Milton Lewis is one of nine children born to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph B. Lewis in New Providence Bahamas. He attended the Oakes Field Primary School and graduated from Bahamas Academy in 1972.

In 1978 he graduated with a B.Ed. in Secondary Education from West Indies College in Mandeville, Jamaica now Northern Caribbean University and taught at Cooper’s Town High School in Abaco. After four years of teaching he became principal of Rolleville All-Age School in Exuma. Mr. Lewis spent sixteen years of his career on the Family Islands. Before returning to Nassau he completed a Master’s Degree in School Administration and Supervision from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan in 1993.

After serving as a principal in five primary schools in Nassau, he was promoted to District Education Officer for the Southeastern District in 2012. This concluded a thirty year stint as a principal.

In addition to working in primary schools, Mr. Lewis lectured at Sojourner Douglas College and at the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (B.T.V.I.). Having an interest in public speaking and leadership, Mr. Lewis Joined the Cable Beach West Toastmasters Club 6796, where he served as President on three occasions. In 1993 he served as the Chairman of the 1st Annual Crooked Island, Acklins and Long Cay Community Awareness Week. In the education arena, he served as President of the Primary Principals’ Association for six years.

In religion he served as a Sabbath School Superintendent and an Elder in the Johnson Park Seventh-day Adventist Church. Youth work is his passion; he served as a Pathfinder Director for many years.

Apart from giving back to his students and parents Mr. Lewis was a member of the Bahamas Plays and Film Control Board.

Mr. Lewis does not have any claim to fame, save that he served his beloved Bahama Land well for more than 37 years in the noblest profession-teaching.

In 1985, he married Verna Lewis nee Curtis of Moss Town, Exuma and together they have two daughters, Takara and Tameka.
